THE MEANING OF MANULUA

Manulua = MAH-noo-LOO-ah

One of the oldest motifs. This is a symbol of unity, the coming together of two families, two lineages, two legacies. In Tongan tradition, it represents harmony, balance, and the strength found in connection.

Manulua Transalated

This motif is translated to manu “beast or bird”(bird in this context) and lua “two or pair”. Two birds or a pair of birds. Described as two birds flying in a circle and meeting or two birds back to back. Even as a pair of wings. Also know as Kaso in Fijian.

Behind The History

Manulua in many variations appear in ngatu (Tongan tapa cloth), tatatau (traditional tattooing), royal regalia, and ceremonial wear, representing powerful connections: between people, ancestors, and islands. Seen in Tongan art, architecture, and textiles, the Manulua motif carries deep cultural weight. Used in formal exchanges, weddings, funerals, and chiefly ceremonies. Its symmetry speaks to harmony, leadership, and lineage, an emblem of strength wrapped in story.
